Background of the Study
Agricultural expansion is a key driver of economic growth in many regions; however, it often comes at the expense of natural ecosystems, particularly wetlands. In Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, the conversion of wetlands into farmland has raised significant environmental concerns. Wetlands, which provide vital ecological services such as water purification, flood control, and habitat for diverse species, are under threat from encroaching agricultural activities (Obi, 2023). As farmers clear wetlands for crop production, the loss of biodiversity and disruption of hydrological cycles become increasingly apparent (Adebayo, 2024). Moreover, the drainage and alteration of wetland landscapes exacerbate soil erosion and reduce the natural capacity to mitigate floods (Eze, 2025). This study examines the consequences of agricultural expansion on wetland conservation in Ughelli North, aiming to balance economic development with environmental preservation. It explores the complex interactions between farming practices and wetland degradation, providing evidence for sustainable land management policies that protect these vital ecosystems (Obi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
The rapid expansion of agricultural land in Ughelli North has led to significant degradation of wetland ecosystems, threatening biodiversity and reducing the natural benefits provided by these areas. Unsustainable farming practices, coupled with weak regulatory oversight, have resulted in the irreversible loss of wetland habitats (Adebayo, 2024). This study seeks to identify the key drivers of wetland degradation due to agricultural expansion and to assess the long-term environmental and socio-economic impacts, underscoring the need for sustainable land use planning (Eze, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the extent of wetland loss due to agricultural expansion.

To evaluate the environmental and socio-economic impacts of wetland degradation.

To propose sustainable land management practices that balance agriculture and conservation.

Research Questions:

How does agricultural expansion affect wetland conservation in Ughelli North?

What are the environmental and socio-economic consequences of wetland loss?

What sustainable practices can mitigate the adverse impacts of agricultural expansion?

Research Hypotheses:

H1: Agricultural expansion significantly contributes to wetland degradation.

H2: Loss of wetlands negatively impacts local biodiversity and flood control.

H3: Sustainable land management practices will improve wetland conservation outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the delicate balance between agricultural development and environmental conservation. The findings will inform policymakers on sustainable land use strategies that preserve wetland ecosystems while supporting local agricultural needs, thereby ensuring long-term environmental and economic sustainability (Obi, 2023; Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the impact of agricultural expansion on wetland conservation in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State. The study does not address other land use changes outside agricultural activities.

Definitions of Terms:

Agricultural Expansion: The increase in land area devoted to farming activities.

Wetland Conservation: The protection and sustainable management of wetland ecosystems.

Biodiversity: The variety of living organisms within a particular habitat.
